The Roman bath-building, which appears first to have taken its characteristic form in Campania, was a leading influence in the development of concrete construction. The range of variation, both in size and layout, is enormous, running from such vast recreation centres as the Baths of Caracalla and Diocletian in Rome, with their libraries, meeting halls, swimming pools, gardens and fountains, down to the domestic bath suites which provided the basic requirements of a cold, a warm and a hot room: frigidarium, tepidarium and calidarium. A keynote of the great public baths was their symmetrical planning around an axis which ran from the main entrance, across the palaestra, or exercise courtyard, and through the centre of the principal frigidarium and calidarium. The early fourth-century Imperial Baths at Trier stand at the end of a line which stretches back at least as far as the Baths of Titus in Rome, and which finds other provincial examples in the Hadrianic Baths at Lepcis Magna, the Antonine Baths at Carthage, and those of Timgad and Ephesus. The interiors were sumptuously decorated with mosaic floors, marble columns and veneers, and vaulted ceilings, though in contrast the exterior was usually completely unadorned.

The Hunting Baths at Lepcis Maglia, well known for the stark roofline of their concrete vaults, which survive complete, illustrate one of the many more informal arrangements of rooms. In the Forum and Stabian Baths al Pompeii and the Suburban Baths al Herculaneum, a simple range of rooms adjoined a palaestra secluded behind the shops on the street frontage. As at Lepcis, the vaulting is intact; much of the stucco decoration is preserved. We see the attractive but modest surroundings of everyday-life in all ordinary Roman town.

The baths were a notable Roman introduction to the East, where they were combined with the established functions of the hellenistic gymnasium. A distinctive feature of public baths in such cities as Ephesus and Pergamum is a large rectangular room fronting the palaestra, its walls decorated internally with columns and statuary in the manner of the theatre and nymphacum façades. In many western provincial towns, the baths were second only to the forum and basilica in architectural importance, and notable bath buildings are also a feature of rural religious sanctuaries in Gaul. The city of Bath was also an important sanctuary, and unique in Britain in having, in addition to the normal bath suites, a great vaulted hall which covered the rectangular pool fed by the sacred thermal springs.

Throughout history, lavender has had many uses, from Roman baths and aromatherapy to medicinal uses. Today, little has changed with the many uses of this sweet smelling fragrance. The scent of lavender has long been considered the scent of relaxation and used as a stress reliever.

Going back to Biblical times when Lavender is mentioned in the Old Testament as one of the holy herbs in Solomon’s Temple used to prepare the holy essence in the temple. Known as spikenard, it is also mentioned in the New Testament as a costly ointment used to anoint Jesus feet.

During ancient Roman times, lavender was used in Roman baths to scent the water and restore the skin. The Greeks burned the oils of lavender to release a relaxing fume. Lavender was recognized by the Romans as a healing remedy as well as it antiseptic qualities. Roman soldiers carried lavender with them to battle and were used to clean and dress the wounds of soldiers. The Roman ladies also used lavender oils to perfume themselves, their baths, beds and the walls of their homes.

In the Dark Ages lavender was placed among the linens, sewn into sweet bags, used as an air freshener, and mixed with beeswax to make furniture polish. Lavender is one of the oldest perfumes used in England. Queen Elizabeth loved lavender so much that she encouraged the development of lavender farms. The wife of King Charles I used lavender to perfume soaps, in water for bathing, and as a potpourri, and King Charles VI of France had lavender sewn into his seat cushion.

During Victorian times, lavender became known all over the world, however production nearly died out because of the pressures of increased land values. Queen Victoria enjoyed the use of lavender and appointed Miss Sarah Sprules as “Purvey of Lavender Essence to the Queen.” Lavender became overused and lost popularity in the 20th century mostly because it was associated with “old ladies.”

The Latin root word for lavender (lavare) means “to wash” may be the reason it has been added to many bath products such as soap, shampoo, and bubble bath products. Today lavender is once again the scent of choice with many similar uses of ancient time being used today. Scientific evidence suggests that the scent of lavender may slow the activity of the nervous system, improve sleep quality, promote relaxation and lift moods.

Once again the production of soap, shampoo, bubble bath, sea salt are typically found in spa gift baskets that contain lavender scents and are gaining in popularity as a stress reliever. In these modern times with our hectic lifestyles, lavender is still being used the same way it was during ancient Roman times. Some things just never change, do they?

The Roman Baths are the best know tourist attraction in the English city of Bath. In fact the cities name is derived from these baths. They attract over a million visitors a year and, like all roman baths, are surrounded by the bath’s buildings. They are situated in the city centre.

All Roman cities had similar public baths, but this was the only one in the United Kingdom. It is now a world heritage centre. In the Roman period it was almost unheard of for anyone but the very wealthiest to have baths in their homes, due to the difficulty of heating water and large families meaning there wasn’t enough space for bathrooms and baths that are so common now. The public baths were used by everyone, both rich and poor. There was an entrance fee but they were low so even the poor were able to afford to visit them weekly. The baths were owned and maintained by the government. The main reason for the Roman baths were for people to clean themselves but visiting them also became an important social activity; it was a place to meet people and meet with friends. It was also a way for men, in particular, to exercise. This was not just by swimming but also by using other facilities that were provided. In many ways they were a precursor to gyms, with even competitions taking place. Many baths also had gardens which visitors could use. In short public baths were the hub of the Roman society in all Roman cities across the globe.

In Bath rainfall percolates through the limestone and once undergrounds is warmed by the earth’s properties. This water then travels underground and reappears via a natural spring. When the Romans first came to Bath they were immediately attracted to this spring and created the baths that still exist to the present day. Using this natural spring they used a clever system of pumps to move the water into the pool area the Romans had created. Heaters were used to maintain the warm temperature.

These Roman baths have now been developed into a major tourist attraction. They are the largest Roman baths still available for visitors to view in the world. These baths are world famous and is what the city is known for by many. The buildings around the baths that used to hold changing rooms and other facilities, now mainly houses a museum. In the museum are many artifacts from the Roman period from throughout the United Kingdom. There is also a restaurant where visitors can have a meal while overlooking the famous baths below. They still contain water that flows from the natural spring, but visitors are not permitted to bath in them.

Ancient Roman Empire included the three continents – Europe, Africa (northern) and the Middle East. The Roman empire was one of the powerful empires of the ancient world. Historians believe that the earliest Roman settlements began in 753 BC. The Roman Empire was divided into Western Empire and Eastern Empire. The glory of the Roman Empire was at its peak in 200 AD and the entire empire spanned over an area of 2.5 million square miles. Many of the achievements of the ancient Romans are still in use today. Here we look at some of the achievements of the ancient Romans.

Roman Army

The Roman Empire was powerful, due to its strong military tactics. Roman military policies helped to expand the empire. The soldiers were trained in the latest tactics of war and were well equipped with the weapons of war. The soldiers belonged to a particular “legion”. A legion is an army unit that has around 5,000 soldiers including, heavy and light infantry, and cavalry. A legion was further divided into “maniples” that consisted of over 100 men.

Till the end of the 2nd century BC, the Roman army consisted of male citizens of age group 17 and 46 years, who were called for duty each year. The army men from a particular area were put under a particular unit and these units were called “centuries”; officers who commanded them were called “centurions”. This form of army was known as a “citizen army”. Gradually, the citizen army was replaced by “standing army” and was paid in terms of cash or land by their commanding officers. One of the responsibilities of the legion soldiers was to defend the Roman Empire and not conquest. When the Roman Empire expanded, the Roman army consisted of the captives and the barbarians who were captives of the war.

Roman Art and Literature

The official language of the Roman army and the government officials was Latin. This language is still spoken today by the Romans. Languages such as Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Rumanian and French were derived from Latin. Latin is the language used by the Catholic Church in Vatican and the Pope is known as Pontifex Maximus.

The Romans developed the alphabets that are widely used in all the European languages, including English. They also developed Roman numerals, which are used today by many to highlight important document points. Ancient Romans gave importance to education and had sent their children to schools.

The ancient Romans were interested in creative arts and followed the rules of the traditional Greek arts. One such art form was “Mosaic” arts. This was probably developed during the 3rd or the 4th BC. In mosaic, art was created using small pieces of tiles, glasses or stones. These pieces were arranged on the smooth surface, such as a wall, to form a pattern. The pictures of Roman gods and goddesses, legendary heroes from Roman literature or the images of nature were the subject matter of these mosaic arts. Some mosaic art also depicted the day-to-day life of a Roman family.

Roman sculptors were known for their realistic sculptures. They sculpted the life-like sculptures of Roman gods and goddesses and also of their rulers. They also sculpted Greek gods and goddesses.

Roman literature including drama, poetry and prose became popular during the 240 BC. and this period is known as the Golden Age of Roman drama. Vergil was a famed Roman poet who authored the books Aeneid, Bucolics and Georgics in 30 BC.

Roman Architecture

The ancient Romans were great architects and builders. As they expanded their empire, they constructed many beautiful buildings and roads. Well-maintained roads connected each city of the Roman empire to Rome. Romans were the first people to introduce the technology of road construction.

They invented the technology for concrete, aqueducts, arches and roads. Ancient Rome was the capital of the Roman empire. When a new city was conquered, roads were made to connect it to Rome. Milestones were installed on the side of the roads, which told the traveler the distance to be covered to reach Rome. The streets of the ancient Roman cities were laid in a geometric pattern.

Ancient Roman aqueducts were built to carry water from the springs or rivers to the public baths and fountains. These baths had a wonderful plumbing system to drain the dirty water. Aqueducts were built throughout the Roman empire and many of them are still in perfect condition and in use.

Arches were constructed to commemorate the victories of the Roman emperors. These were intricately designed with stone carvings and statuary. Some of the examples of the marvelous pieces of architecture are Circus Maximus, the Colosseum and the Pantheon.

Roman Laws

The ancient Romans formulated many of the laws that most countries use even today. Roman laws were applicable to all Romans, irrespective of his position in the society. Here are a few of laws of the ancient Romans. The laws were written on metal tables and were organized into twelve sections. Therefore, they were known as “The Twelve Tables”. These tables were displayed at the various Roman forums or meeting places in all the Roman cities. Here are a few laws that were in use during the ancient Roman civilization.

A law that is used by many countries even today – “A person is innocent until proven guilty”.

If you have summons from the court, you are expected to attend the court. Else, you could be taken by force to the court.

Capital punishment would be imposed on a person found guilty of giving false witness.

No one is allowed to hold meetings after nightfall.

Ancient Roman Empire was not only powerful but also vast. The glory of the Roman empire and its civilization lasted for almost 1,000 years. The Roman myths and their mythology still fascinate readers.

Constantine was the first Roman emperor to embrace and practice Christianity. He also legalized the worship of the Roman gods. However, there were constant clashes between the clans who practiced Christianity and those who worshiped Roman gods. Hence, the historians opine one of the causes of the downfall of the Roman Empire was the lack of religious unity.

With the cost of gas and electricity spiralling out of control people are thinking more than ever about how they can heat their homes efficiently to help reduce heating costs. As well as this people are more aware of the environmental cost of heating their homes and are constantly looking for ways to ensure there is as little wastage of energy as possible. One of the most efficient forms of heating your home is by using under floor heating.

Under floor heating was initially used by the Romans to heat their bath houses back in the time of the Roman Empire so if it was good enough for the Romans then it should be good enough for the modern family.

Whereas the Romans used fires and a hyper course system to heat the floor in their bath houses today’s under floor heating is a bit more sophisticated, using electric cables or hot water pipes to warm the floor and radiate the heat upwards.

As the Romans discovered, under floor heating is really well suited to a bathroom environment so more and more people are now following suit and installing an under floor heating system in their bathroom with very little disruption to your home.

All that is needed normally is a hot water feed (from a radiator) or an electricity supply and when the floor is lifted the matting that holds the pipes or cable can be laid and then the floor re-laid and there you have your very own under floor heating system in your bathroom.

It is strange how the nations bathing habits have changed over the past fifty to sixty years, I am sure we have all heard stories from our grandparents of how they used to be bathed in the kitchen sink or even in a tin bath in front of an open fire for heat. For many people in our generation when you were growing up the height of luxury was taking a shower which seems crazy when you think how common place showers are nowadays. But things are still moving on in the world of bathrooms and the latest innovation for the well to do family is a steam shower cubicle.

A steam shower cubicle is a really serious piece of bathroom gadgetry and will usually need the help of a qualified plumber to make sure that it is installed correctly as there is much more to it than installing a standard shower. Because a steam shower cubicle is wired up to the electricity supply to enable all of its features to work correctly you may even require the services of a qualified electrician to guarantee that it is safely installed and that no one gets electrocuted.

Steam shower cubicles are very different from a normal shower cubicle because the enclosure will trap steam inside creating a really warm environment helping to open your pores and ensuring a deep clean, invigorating your body at the same time. The only problem is that a steam shower is so comfortable and has so many gadgets for you to play with you may not want to get out.
